So after travelling to Manchester, Frome and London to see Melanie, finally she is playing a local venue. The Stables in Wavendon, Milton Keynes was created by Cleo Lane and John Dankworth. Originally a converted stable, a new venue was built on the site several years ago and is one of my favourites. And now it seems one of Melanie and Beaus too. I always thought it would be a good place to see Melanie but never thought I would. So you can probably imagine how thrilled I was when it was on the tour schedule last year and even more thrilled to see her back again last night. And she wants to come back again! Anytime I say.
It is a good crowd tonight, perhaps a little reluctant to sing along or join in on the 'hump ha ha' part, but a good atmosphere. Beau opens the show at 8pm with a set of about 25 minutes and from the applause at the end is very much appreciated. There is a short intermission before Melanie comes on stage. She seems relaxed and happy. The set is a mix of the more recent material and the classics and, of course, a few audience requests. Melanie is in great voice again, but this is her seventh show within a two week period and following those extraordinary performances at the Jazz Cafe it is not surprising, if occasionally, cracks do show. But her energy and her stamina during these shows never fails to amaze me.
The set list was:
Love To Lose Again
Jammin' Alone
Make It Work For Me
To Be The One
Any Guy
Alexander Beetle
Brand New Key
Smile
(a second intermission)
Ruby Tuesday
Love Doesn't Have To Hurt
You're Gonna Miss Me
Babe Rainbow
I Tried To Die Young
Momma, Momma
Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)
Peace Will Come
Something Warm
What Have They Done To My Song, Ma?
The Stables was my final show on this tour and I just want to say how much I have enjoyed it. Not just seeing Melanie but meeting many other fans. Melanie concerts are special, but they are even more special when they are shared in the good company of others. Hope its not too long before meet again.
